I started growing cannabis in 2010, not knowing it would become a lifelong passion. What began as simple curiosity quickly turned into a deep appreciation for the plant—its resilience, its complexity, and the many ways it could enhance life. As I learned more, I saw firsthand the benefits it brought to my own well-being, reinforcing my respect for its potential. That respect naturally evolved into a desire to create, to refine, and to push the plant’s expression further. Breeding my own cultivars became a vehicle of creativity —selecting, crossing, and shaping genetics not just for yield or potency, but for something personal, something meaningful. Every new generation is a step deeper into that journey, a tribute to the plant that has given me so much.
Black Moon Cultivars is the culmination of that experience and the creative passion that drives me, with a little a nod to the eerie, the enigmatic, and the beautifully unconventional things in life that I love so much.
Pheno hunting is the art of selecting the best traits from a batch of seeds, and one of the first critical steps is observing seedling vigor and morphology. Strong, healthy seedlings with rapid growth, sturdy stems, and uniform leaf development often indicate desirable genetics. By assessing early structure, resilience, and overall vitality, we can identify standout plants that have the potential to express the most favorable traits as they mature.
Tight internodal spacing can lead to dense, compact buds, while wider spacing may promote better airflow and mold resistance. As plants mature, observing how flowers stack along the branches, their resin production, and overall bud structure helps identify phenotypes that balance yield, potency, and resilience—essential traits for a standout cultivar. Which brings us to...
During pheno hunting, terpene assessments and senescence provide key insights into a plant’s unique expression. Evaluating terpene profiles through stem rubs, early flower aromas, and final cured scents helps identify standout phenos with complex, desirable flavors. As the plant approaches the end of its lifecycle, observing senescence —the way leaves fade, trichomes mature, and colors develop—can reveal clues about genetics and overall ripening patterns. Selecting phenos with rich terpene expression and graceful senescence ensures a final product that excels in both aroma and performance.
